Born in Hong Kong, Daly City Colma Chamber member since 2007, Philanthropist Daisy Li moved to Toronto where she studied restaurant management at Ryerson University and hospitality management at Oklahoma State University. In 1991, together with her husband and business partner Chef Paul Ng, they created the iconic “Moonstar” as an upscale premium seafood buffet in San Francisco and in 2006 relocated to Daly City. With the COVID-19 pandemic, they shifted gears and closed the doors of Moonstar Buffet.
Daisy shared, “It was a difficult decision for us, especially, after 30 years of successfully serving tasty meals in San Francisco and Daly City. Our lease was ending. We were worried that a buffet style restaurant was not a viable option for the near future because of COVID-19. The solution was for Moonstar Buffet to operate in partnership with their sister company, MoonChef, at 405 S. Canal St., South San Francisco, preparing meals to-go from a central kitchen. With the brand-new kitchen, I can continue to innovate with technology and offer new items and ways to help celebrate special events with quality food. This move allowed us to make the next phase of our business plan a reality, five years earlier than our business plan projected, ‘The Moonstar Charitable Organization’. This is a new 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization setup to help other non-profits fundraise, bring awareness to food waste, work with grocery stores in food donations and bring together other interested restaurants and chefs to make a difference.”
