Spotlight on JBL Med Transport

BY: Alison Wilson
October 2022

Jay Ricafort, President of JBL Med Transport, LLC opened the conversation saying, “My elderly mother lived in a Pacifica care facility due to kidney failure and cancer.  She was wheelchair bound. It was hard for her to see doctors, attend social events, go to dialysis treatments, shopping at the mall and to eat at her favorite restaurants because of her lack of mobility.  To solve this transportation problem, I purchased a wheelchair van. When the staff at the facility saw my wheelchair van, they asked me if I could start transporting people to their appointments. I researched on what I would need to start the business. I said, yes.  In May 2010, JBL Med Transport was born.”

When asked about his unique business and how he named JBL Med Transport, LLC, Jay replied, “My mother had since passed.  I continue to serve the elderly and the people with disabilities in her memory. Our mission is to provide non-emergency mobility to those who are immobile with love and compassion. My family and I couldn’t think of a name to call the business, so we decided on the initial  J for Jay, B for my daughter, Bianca, and L for my wife, Lourdes. The company had grown from 1 van to 12 wheelchair and gurney vans with 18 employees with an office here in Colma. Our goal this coming year is to increase our fleet by 30%. We are a green organization researching electric vehicles to reduce our carbon footprint contribution.”

Their company slogan is “JBL Med Transport Gets You There.”  Jay said, “People need transportation.
It doesn’t matter if you are ambulatory, wheelchair bound, or on a gurney, we’ll pick you up and get you wherever you need to go. We offer complete door-to-door transportation for surgery, blood work, doctor’s appointment, dental appointment, therapy, dialysis, your place of worship, funerals, the mall, bingo, or any family gatherings. You name it we’ll get you there. We do full-service care. We can move you from your bed to the wheelchair or gurney, we can carry you up and down the stairs, and we can also escort you around your appointments. We take pride to ensure your comfort and safety throughout the trip.”

I asked Jay why he located his business in Colma and he replied, “Our location affects our business in a way of convenience. It’s centrally located, close to the freeways, close to all the shops that we take our vehicles if we need service or repair. Being in Colma means we are close to where our clients are staying or going. We provide non-medical transportation service to the Bay Area.”
